Energising smoothies

Energising smoothies help combat spring fatigue and provide the energy you need to power through from dawn to dusk with a smile on your face!

Whether it’s because of the time of year, the demands of work or study, or simply not getting enough rest, there are times when we could all do with an extra boost of energy, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other nutrients to make the day ahead a gentle stroll and not a tiresome trudge.
Energy shakes, or smoothies, provide a healthy, natural and versatile way of kickstarting the day or boosting energy levels at any time, and all you need is a blender. Just choose the fruit and vegetables you fancy and blend. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

Mango and banana
This classic combo is highly nutritious, antioxidant, rich in fibre, and is perfect for powering up your mind and body. Simply peel and chop the fruit, add a small tub of natural yoghurt, two almonds, a spoonful of oats and half a teaspoon of turmeric powder. Blend until you get a smooth, thick and creamy consistency.

Kiwi and melon
Just one kiwi and a slice of melon is all it takes to make this refreshing burst of energy in a glass. Peel, chop and add to blender with cold water and ice. Aim for a nice creamy consistency.

Green energy
Green smoothies provide energy and nutrients thanks to their green leaves packed with chlorophyll and antioxidants – ideal for combating mental fatigue caused by stress. All you need is two celery stalks, a bunch of spinach and half a litre of water. Wash well and chop. Blend and strain through a sieve. Serve when freshly made for optimum benefits.

Orange and flax
All you need are five oranges and cold-pressed linseed oil. Peel the oranges and cut them into segments. Blend them with three tablespoons of flaxseed oil (or hempseed oil if preferred) and a glass of cold water. This smoothie provides magnesium, potassium and vitamin C from the oranges, and the flaxseed oil slows the release of sugar into the bloodstream, giving a good energy boost.

Pre-workout
There’s no better way to fuel your body before exerting mega energy than this effortlessly energising smoothie. Just take one low-fat yoghurt, a large ripe banana, 300 ml almond milk, two tablespoons of honey and a pinch of cinnamon. Blend well, and drink at least one hour before your workout.
