Ermita de Los Dolores

The Ermita de los Dolores church is a perfect example of the beautiful simplicity of traditional Lanzarote architecture. It is all-white with volcanic cornerstones. Its modest size is at odds with its important place in island legend. It was built to pay homage to Our Lady of Sorrows, also referred to as Our Lady of the Volcanoes, to give thanks for the miracle that occurred during the 18th-century eruptions. As the devastating flow of lava was about to engulf the village, her statue was carried out as prayers were said. Suddenly, the lava halted, saving Mancha Blanca just in time. Beside the church, there is a framed urn set in the petrified lava explaining the miracle.
