The Heartbreakers

The Heartbreakers are a multinational band from Lanzarote who are hitting their stride with a festival-ready sound and a passion for composing original songs

The Heartbreakers formed in 2022 from the ashes of a previous project called Good Intentions. The band initially faced growing pains as lead singers came and went, and their English guitarist Gary moved on. But everything finally gelled together when they found Marius, a skilled Romanian guitarist and keyboard player with deep island connections, and Arima, a talented young vocalist from Lanzarote. These additions, along with bassist Alejandro (Catalan) and drummer Juan Carlos (Colombian), solidified the band’s current lineup.

Juan Carlos tells us how they wrestled with defining their musical identity as they searched for months for a singer. Finally, they found Argentinian performer Paloma, who sang with them for six months before Arima joined the band. For a brief period, The Heartbreakers had two vocalists. However, Paloma had to quit due to other commitments. With Arima, though, everything clicked into place naturally.

‘With this lineup, established since February, we’ve been busy gigging on the local scene, playing in restaurants, hotels, parties, and festivals. We were recently invited to the fourth edition of JuveFest in Arrecife, which was an incredible experience. It was dedicated to 80s music, so we fitted right in as our repertoire features a ton of covers from that era –Queen, Elton John, Dire Straits, U2, Tina Turner, and Led Zeppelin. We also play hits from the 90s and even the early 2000s, with artists like Amy Winehouse.’

‘Looking ahead, our sights are set on performing at more festivals, developing more original music, adding dome dazzling audiovisual elements to our live shows and expanding our horizons beyond Lanzarote.’

One thing that sets us apart is our ability to improvise and collaborate well together. Everyone gets to have a say, there are no egos, and we all agree that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. We’re a united force, a truly democratic band!’
