This summer’s most spectacular designer pools promise integrated materials, clever lighting, and seamless functionality
The hottest poolside trend revolves around integrated living. Think all-in-one: pool with terrace, chill-out zone, sun deck with pergola and loungers, play area, and barbecue spot. Easy access is a must, with steps or ramps, and maybe even a recreation platform or an island.
For ultimate flexibility, consider a pool with a movable, variable-depth floor. At the touch of a button on a remote control, the pool floor can be lowered to its deepest level for swimming, adjusted to mid-depth for aqua aerobics or raised further to convert it into a shallow splash pool ideal for the kids. Some systems even raise the floor placing it flush with the surrounding area, covering the water entirely for maximum safety and space. The hydraulic system is inherently safe, floating naturally without overhead suspension or electric motors, and activated only by a secure code or key.
Retractable mobile walls offer even more versatility, allowing you to divide the pool into separate zones – perhaps creating an indoor/outdoor pool, heating only the indoor section during winter.
One of the most exciting new directions in pool design centres on the artful fusion of materials and finishes. High-quality materials and impeccable finishes are a given, but the current emphasis is on innovative combinations that push design boundaries and elevate the pool area. For instance, large-format synthetic panels can be paired with natural stone – with a wide choice of colours and textures, from beige or green limestone to grey limestone, white marble, black granite, or even volcanic lava. However, to achieve a truly integrated and harmonious result, ensure your choice of stone blends well with the pool coating. Italian vetrite, for example, gives a seamless, visually stunning look.
If you’re after a more rustic vibe with a touch of Ibiza or Lanzarote (César Manrique) charm, a winning combination is white masonry with natural wood, soft lighting, subtle ceramics and strategically placed plants. Add a second tier and a waterfall for that extra wow factor.
Premium lighting elevates any pool. It transforms it into a work of art, adding personality and complementing the garden. Opalescent linings like vetrite, with their semi-transparent quality, are perfect for backlighting. For the best effect, install evenly distributed LED panels on the inside of the coating.
