Shar-pei – adorably wrinkly & huggable dogs

They look like soft cuddly toys, but Shar-Peis are more than just adorable wrinkly faces. This affectionate Chinese breed is calm and playful with a devoted, protective nature…and highly huggable!

Affectionately nicknamed ‘wrinkly dogs,’ Shar-Peis have a distinctive appearance which is instantly recognisable because of their loose and wrinkled skin, particularly around their heads and necks. Their blue-black tongue and small, triangular ears complete the look. Originating from southeastern China, they were used for guarding, herding, and hunting. The breed faced near extinction in the 1970s but fortunately, they were saved from dying out and have since become popular with dog owners worldwide.
Standing between 46 and 51 cm tall, Shar-Peis are medium-sized dogs, and although there’s barely any difference in size between males and females, males tend to weigh a bit more: 18 to 25 kg, compared to 16 to 20 kg for females. They have a calm, loyal, affectionate nature and despite their independent streak, they are highly devoted to their loved ones and protective to their family. Their life expectancy is between nine and eleven years.
There are three main varieties of Shar-Pei coat types: short-haired, the most common and recognisable type; rough-coated (longer); and brush-coated, which is longer than the first and the softest.
The puppy stage is crucial for Shar-Peis. In their first six months, they are highly playful and curious, and their wrinkled skin may seem more pronounced and need plenty of care and attention. Early socialisation is also crucial for their development and owners should be sure to introduce them to a variety of experiences and situations, like meeting other people and animals from a young age to help them grow into friendly, well-adjusted adult dogs.
As for diet, thanks to their origins as hunting and herding dogs, Shar-Peis require a protein-rich diet to maintain their health and energy and to help develop strong muscles. Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are also essential for skin and coat health. As they grow into adults and in their senior stages, opt for lean proteins. Due to their tendency towards obesity, portion control is important.
Regular care is essential for Shar-Peis, with special attention paid to their skin, teeth, and eyes. Use specific shampoos for dogs and clean their wrinkles regularly to prevent moisture accumulation and avoid skin infections. Dental hygiene can be maintained by brushing their teeth and providing them with dental toys, and regular veterinary check-ups are also vital.
