A continuous lattice wall of extruded stoneware creates privacy while allowing air to circulate freely. As the sun traces its arc across the day, shifting light and shadow transform the terrace into a study of texture and rhythm.
‘Al desnudo’ — ‘Naked’ — is the name of Mayice Studio’s project for Espacio Nuet Ceramics at Casa Decor 2026. Conceived as an outdoor living space within an urban setting, the design takes its cues directly from its surroundings. Here, stoneware ceramics and light shape the space as much as the structure itself.
Marta Alonso and Imanol Calderón, the designers behind Mayice Studio, explore extruded stoneware ceramics as the sole material within a unified construction system. Walls, floors and structural elements are perforated with varying patterns, scales and openings. As the hours pass, shadows shift across the surfaces, changing colour and perception while bringing movement to both the material and the space. The changing light also softens the monochrome palette, giving the ceramic an ever-evolving quality.
Reinterpreted for the island’s architecture and warmer climate, the design could easily adopt chalk-white or off- white tones that sit naturally alongside volcanic stone and sunlit landscapes. Slightly thicker lattice panels and narrower openings could also offer greater protection from the wind while enhancing the shadow play.
The concept naturally lends itself to new forms and extensions without losing either its visual unity or the enduring quality of ceramic. Against that permanence, the shifting interplay of light and shadow imagined by Mayice Studio gives the space a fleeting, ever-changing character.
