Neo Art Deco: reviving luxury & glamour

Art Deco is back, but with a modern twist. The iconic style synonymous with the Roaring Twenties is making a comeback, reinterpreted with contemporary elegance and comfort

Like fashion, interior design trends are cyclical. Art Deco, born in the glamorous 1920s, is making a comeback, perhaps inspired by the enduring style of Miami’s iconic Art Deco district. While the new Art Deco style, or Neo Art Deco, maintains the signature elements of the original style – geometric patterns, luxurious materials, symmetrical patterns, botanical motifs, chrome, and mirrors, Neo Art Deco offers a fresh take on the classic. A hundred years later, it’s equally sophisticated but more modern, more comfortable, and more playful with colour and texture.
The Neo Art Deco style is all about luxury and elegance but with a contemporary twist. For an added sense of opulence, soft, plush velvet and leather are popular choices for sofas, armchairs, and ottomans. Dare to choose from a wide range of colours. Cushions also feature a mix of textures, combining silk and crochet with accents of gold and shimmer.
Neo Art Deco typically features a sophisticated and elegant colour palette centred around a combination of black, white, gold, and silver. This stylish yet understated look can be applied to all furniture and accessories. Chocolate brown adds warmth, but lighter neutral tones like beige also work well. Consider adding green, lavender, or rose accents as pops of colour. However, you can also create a more modern look with bold contrasts. For example, try decorating with dark emerald-green walls and add bright yellow armchairs.
Symmetry and geometric patterns are defining hallmarks of this style, and no aspiring Neo Art Deco space should be without them! Effective ways to incorporate them are through wallpaper, furniture or rugs. Choose large, striking pieces with modern, clean lines, ideally featuring chrome and exotic wood detailing.
This style embodies luxury while maintaining a minimalist approach characterised by clean lines and uncluttered spaces. It is essential to avoid the temptation of overloading the space; instead, focus on incorporating only carefully selected, high-quality furnishings and decorative items, prioritising quality over quantity. Typical motifs include leaves, feathers, geometric shapes, and animals such as peacocks and panthers. Essential features for this style include large gold-framed mirrors, geometric rugs, and budget and space permitting, marble floors.
