EELS, NASA’s snake-like robot explorer

NASA engineers have developed a snake-like robot called EELS (Exobiology Extant Life Surveyor) to search for evidence of life in the ocean beneath the icy crust of Saturn’s moon, Enceladus. The android weighs about 100 kilograms, is four metres long and is designed to be completely autonomous as it senses its environment. It’s capable of collecting data with scientific instruments and making decisions on its own, as well as navigating sand, ice, cliff walls and underground lava tubes.
