Comfort and colour, summer 2022

For her

Warm pinks and fuchsia are everywhere, together with oranges, yellows and whites. They can be worn all over or combined with black. Neutral beige makes a good base to tie them together. This summer is about all things bright and beautiful!

Bikinis and swimming costumes move into the city with urban beachy vibes courtesy of Isabel Marant, who styled classic triangle bikini tops over basic t-shirts. Alongside these beach-to-party looks are mini-skirts, a seasonal must-have. Also trendy, according to Miu Miu, Valentino and Courreges is anything denim, sexy and inspired by the ’90s. Other seasonal musts include crochet for that boho, hippy feel, as presented by Missoni, Altuzarra and Alberta Ferretti, and fringes. You’ll see them on jackets, skirts, bags and dresses. Proenza Schouler, Fendi and Chloé are all on the fringe bandwagon too. Also trending this summer is double denim or total-look denim, sexy peek-a-boo tops with daring necklines and garments with cut-out detailing.

Other highlights of the summer catwalks include the mermaid look as seen in the Lanvin and Burberry collections, complete with ruffles, sequins and pearls in shades of aquamarine, blues and greens. A return to the disco looks of the 2000s sees ‘Safari disco’, with camouflage prints, super shiny tops, cargo trousers, leopard print and heels. Alternatively, recreate your take on the bling-bling effect in which embroidered rhinestones, sequins and lots of glitter feature heavily.

For him

Expect the coolest and most appealing looks we’ve seen in years this summer with the comfort of all things oversize, prints, sleeveless tops… flip-flops and sandals. Getting overheated would be criminal, after all.

Dior set the trend for cool and roomy oversize shirts on its catwalks. Comfort is king and knee-length, relaxed fit Bermuda shorts are the order of the day, not above or below, just on the knee.

Style-wise this season sees two stand out trends – prints and sleeveless. Farewell, plain colours; hello floral, geometric and tie-dye prints. They appear on shirts, t-shirts or all over. And it’s time to bare your biceps – arms are on show as sleeves disappear from t-shirts, shirts and even blazers. When the sun goes down and hot days turn to cool nights, your go-to should be a lightweight knitted waistcoat.

Keep cool in mid-thigh length swim shorts. Plain colours are in, but feel free to play with pastels, colour gradients and tye-die too. If you’re a fan of pattern, you’ll love this season’s geometric prints, tropical vibes and sailor stripes. Comfort is key, so make sure they’re in quick-dry fabrics with an adjustable waistband, lining and pockets.

Feet are treated to flip-flops and sandals twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to styles, details and colours.
