Air purifying plants

Indoor plants are more than just decorative, they’re natural air purifiers. By absorbing CO2, releasing oxygen and filtering out toxins, they aid better sleep and help reduce stress

While plants undoubtedly serve a decorative purpose, some go the extra mile. Aside from sitting pretty, they provide oxygen and actively remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other byproducts released by synthetic materials in textiles, coatings, paints, and cleaning products.
Some plants are particularly well-suited for bedrooms. Aloe vera, lavender, and lucky bamboo, for example, promote better sleep, provide freshness, and instil a sense of peace for better rest.
The living room, often the most spacious room in the house, is ideal for large-leafed plants. Experimenting with different shades of green adds depth and creates visual impact. Consider plants like Elephant’s Ear, Swiss Cheese, Parlour Palms, Snake Plants, Bamboo, and the low-maintenance Pothos. For a more exotic feel, try adding orchids.
The Snake Plant, or Mother-in-law’s Tongue, absorbs toxins and CO2 from the air, releasing oxygen while you sleep. It requires minimal light and water and, according to Feng Shui, attracts wealth, happiness, and prosperity. Resilient Parlour palms are elegant, adaptable and renowned for their ability to thrive in various humidity and temperature conditions. Their ornamental fronds elevate any space while purifying the air. Kentia palms are another decorative and low-maintenance option, making them a popular choice for indoor spaces. Swiss cheese plants, with their distinctive perforated leaves, are both beautiful and beneficial. They not only purify the air but have also been shown to reduce stress levels.
If short on space or seeking something unique, air plants, or tillandsias, are the perfect choice. These low-maintenance plants require no soil, making them ideal for those who want to keep their space clean and clutter-free. As perennials, they can thrive year-round with minimal care and even help purify the air. With over 650 species available, including the prolific Bromeliaceae family, you’re sure to find the perfect plant for your space.
The Chinese evergreen (Aglaonema) is a remarkably resilient plant that can thrive even in low-light and poorly ventilated conditions. It’s also an excellent air purifier, removing harmful volatile organic compounds like benzene and formaldehyde frequently found in indoor environments, textiles, and bedding. Rubber plants (Ficus robusta) are another top pick for their ability to remove toxins from the air. Their large, glossy leaves add a touch of tropical flair to any room.
