Hindu Holi Festival 26th March

After a few years’ hiatus, Holi, the great Hindu Festival of Spring, now has a date for 2023 – Sunday 26th March. Health and safety restrictions during the pandemic prevented Lanzarote from being able to enjoy Holi’s annual explosion of joy and colour. However, it’s back on the calendar this year. Representing the Hindu community in Lanzarote, Daniel (Dharmendra) Jethani, told us, ‘We are really excited about celebrating together and sharing our joy and our culture.’

The festival will almost certainly take place in the Plaza de las Naciones, located on the promenade near Los Pocillos beach in Matagorda. Merrymakers will be able to buy coloured powder from the usual stalls and there’ll be typical Indian food and drink available to purchase. In addition, Jethani can confirm that two Desi DJs will be coming all the way from Manchester, England, especially for the occasion.

Train will also be entertaining the crowds with the dhol drum, a traditional percussion instrument used in India to accompany dances and celebrations. As well as showering each other with colours, festival goers can dance to the sounds of Bollywood music, known as ‘Hindi Geet’ or ‘filmi songs’ as well as upbeat Bhangra, a fusion of British and Western pop from the 1970s and 80s with traditional music from Punjab in the North of India.
