More than a billion people celebrate Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights worldwide. This five-day event marks the celebration of the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. The name Diwali originates from the Sanskrit dipavali, meaning ‘row of lights’, referring to the decorative clay lights adorning homes during this period.
Celebrations include prayers, feasts, family gatherings, and fireworks that welcome the beginning of a new year. In 2024, Diwali falls on November 1st.
Just like Holi, the festival of colours, Lanzarote also embraces Diwali. It will be held at the Mácher Teleclub on Sunday, November 3rd, from 1:00 pm to 9:00 pm. This event is being organized by the Hindu Community of Lanzarote (HCL).
Diwali is also a festival open to the whole island. The mayor of Tías and local officials are always invited and are regular participants. The Hindu Community of Lanzarote (HCL) promises Indian cuisine, lively Bollywood performances by local dancers Lanzaboyzz and Lanzagirlzz and music courtesy of guest DJs from the UK and Tenerife.
This year, the HCL plans to share 120 kilos of mithai, a traditional Indian sweet, among those attending and the community.
