6G, already in experimental testing

While most of us have yet to fully experience the benefits of 5G, China has already unveiled an experimental 6G network, with South Korea planning its first 6G pilot project for 2026. 6G – the 6th generation of mobile connectivity – will be the successor to 5G, offering greater speed and reduced latency. It’s expected to supercharge fields like extended reality, holographic communications, and interconnected AI, all while reaching ultra-low energy consumption levels. Before that, we’ll see an intermediate phase: 5G+ or 5.5G, set to arrive this year and could hit speeds of up to 10 Gbps. While we don’t expect 6G to be fully commercialised until around 2030, we’ll likely see its first real-world applications between 2026 and 2028.
