Lanzarote Wine Regulatory Council

The Lanzarote Wine Regulatory Council (DOP) represents the island’s winegrowers and wineries, serving as the official body responsible for certifying the quality and origin of every bottle that carries its seal.

The Regulatory Council for the Protected Designation of Origin (C.R.D.O.P.) Lanzarote Wines protects, certifies and promotes wines produced under its seal. A record thirty-one wineries are currently registered, and may use the official stamp on their bottles, bearing César Manrique’s iconic logo, as a guarantee of quality and provenance.

The Council ensures compliance with its regulations as well as Spanish and EU standards while providing technical support to growers and bodegas. Its remit includes providing advice on pest control, disease prevention, vineyard management, and the monitoring of the Cecens weather stations. It also supports the winemaking process itself through the Cabildo’s oenological laboratory at Granja del Cabildo.
Promotion is another key strand of the Council’s work. Working closely with the sector and public institutions, it helps showcase Lanzarote’s wines and exceptional winegrowing heritage at fairs such as Madrid Fusión, Barcelona Wine Week, Fenavin, FEAGA, GastroCanarias and the Feria de Los Dolores, among others.

The C.R.D.O.P. also plays a key role in local promotional events, including Sonidos Líquidos, the Wine Run, the Teguise Wine & Food Festival, the Toast to D.O. Wines Day (second Sunday in May), and Malvasía Week, which coincides with Wine Tourism Day on the second Sunday in November. In addition, it runs a year-round programme of activities and collaborations, ranging from food-and-wine pairings to guided walks and storytelling sessions, and it delivers training courses on a range of topics linked to viticulture and winemaking.

The Council’s structure reflects the sector it serves, with four representatives from the growers’ community and four bodega owners. The president, vice-president and treasurer are elected from among these eight board members. The current chair is grower Jorge Rodríguez Alonso, while Nereida Pérez González serves as both Secretary of the Plenary and Secretary of the Regulatory Council.

Since April 2022, the C.R.D.O.P. has been based at the Monumento al Campesino, a symbolic move that places it at the gateway to La Geria, the island’s iconic volcanic vineyard landscape. This new location boosts its public profile and makes it more accessible to visitors.

Looking ahead, the Council’s focus is on strengthening the global reputation of Lanzarote wines, advancing sustainability, supporting a new generation of growers, expanding export markets, and, above all, championing the heroic labour of those who coax life from this volcanic soil—one vine, one bottle, at a time.
