It is pure emotion and extravagance, with millions of lights transforming its streets and squares after dark into a spectacle that grows bigger, brighter and more surprising every year. By day, another Vigo awaits, eager to be discovered.<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<p>One man, one challenge: Abel Caballero. It is impossible to understand the scale of Christmas in Vigo without its mayor, the man who turned the city\u2019s lights into a story and that story into a challenge. Having declared this Galician city the Christmas capital of Spain, ahead of Madrid and Barcelona, he then threw down the gauntlet to New York. Each Christmas must outshine the last, turning a tradition into a spectacle and making it central to Vigo\u2019s appeal as a tourist destination. Excess is no longer merely a consequence. It is the whole point. The Baby Jesus was born in Vigo.<\/p>\n<p>On 29 July, with half of Spain still in swimwear, Vigo began preparations for Christmas 2026. Caballero announced a dazzling twelve million LED lights, five hundred illuminated streets, seven thousand decorative features and two thousand seven hundred decorated trees. With four months to assemble it all, the new attractions are naturally kept under wraps. Surprise is part of the show.<\/p>\n<p>Each year, Christmas in Vigo grows larger, with more lights, bigger and better decorations and an ever-expanding programme of activities that draws millions of visitors. The enormous tree in Porta do Sol, giant baubles and gift boxes, and glowing figures all outdo the previous year\u2019s display in imagination, quantity and sheer size. Vigo does not simply switch on more lights each year; it makes the entire stage bigger.<\/p>\n<p>When the lights go out, Vigo awaits. From O Castro, the hill where the city began, the view opens out across the estuary towards the C\u00edes Islands. From there, the route leads into the Casco Vello, through its streets to Porta do Sol and onwards into the Ensanche. Here, another tale unfolds, one of stone, port and Atlantic.<\/p>\n<p>Vigo grew up beside the sea. Life pulses through its old quarter, where narrow streets and steep slopes, lined with arcades and stone houses, flow like rivers into little squares. It does not matter which one you choose. In this labyrinth of streets, getting lost is all part of the pleasure. Ships\u2019 sirens draw you towards the port, a reminder of the city\u2019s maritime, fishing and industrial character. The sea spills over onto plates laden with fish, octopus and shellfish. Empanadas are a source of local pride, while on R\u00faa da Pescader\u00eda the famous oysters of A Pedra are shucked to order and eaten in the street.<\/p>\n<p>You have breathed in Vigo\u2019s atmosphere, walked its streets, eaten well and happily lost track of time. As afternoon gives way to evening, the theatre curtain prepares to rise. The show is about to begin.<\/p>\n<p>In Vigo, Christmas is more than a season. It becomes a dazzling fantasy to explore and experience once you have left your adult self at the entrance. Lights, shapes and colours; enormous baubles you can step inside; cones soaring towards the sky; sounds that bewitch and aromas that embrace\u2026 The big wheel and carousel become time machines, and the city itself one enormous Christmas stocking.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Vigo in December deals in superlatives.
